Several sources say that the word was originated from a Greek word which mean to create. However, according to Oxford dictionaries online, it originated from a Latin word. Definition wise, oxford dictionaries online says that poetry is literary work in which the expression of feelings and ideas is given intensity by the use of distinctive style and rhythm; poems collectively or as a genre of literature.
To me, poetry is the art of expression. There are many genres of poetry varying from war to love and so many more. The origin of poetry is still vague. It is an ancient art which used to mostly be accompanied by music and simple dance. Poetry can also be compared to a song. For example, the oldest complete song from the Ancient Greece did accompany a poem.
Honestly, not many people would like poetry because perhaps they are not aesthetically inclined. Some others dislike it because many poems are difficult to understand. I personally love poetry. In fact, I write my own poems as well.
I was introduced to poetry back when I was in school. I didn't really realize of the existence of poetry when I was a child. Literature in English was one of the subjects I took for my SPM examination. For those of you who don't know what SPM examination is, it is basically a national examination in which the students who are doing the fifth year of secondary school (or high school) have to sit for.
As I have said earlier, I write my own poems. So literature lovers, feast your eyes on a few poems as shown below. Guess which of those poems are mine and feedbacks are most welcomed.

Remember that not all poets have the same style of writing poems. Everyone has their ways of writing. So, a suggestion would be not to judge poems too fast due to a certain poem that was not to you liking. Just as an introduction to one of the many famous poets, here is a quote by one of them.
Rumi is a 13th century Persian poet. His actual name is Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī. His other roles include being a jurist, an Islamic scholar and many more. Among the poems he wrote are Defeated by Love, Gone to the Unseen and other poems as well.
